AmerCable has modified the R-EP-90 insulation material used in several mining cables designed to meet Australian specifications. The modification revolves around the pigment systems used in this recipe, and will result in a lighter colour for the primary insulation. The change to a lighter colour on the insulation will allow for easier identification of any semi-conductive insulation shield material that may remain on the cable during installation or splicing, which will then allow for improved performance due to complete removal of the semi-conductive member.

A secondary benefit is the removal of lead from this formulation. Several end-users of AmerCable products have referenced studies purporting various heavy metals, such as lead and some halogenated flame retardant systems, have a negative human and environmental impact.

AmerCable has developed a new process to enhance pilot extensibility
and pilot cradle performance. The process provides for a more flexible pilot cradle to reduce the stress on the pilot conductor during extreme reeling
and flexing applications. The process will enhance repairability: softer
and easier to strip the cradle from the pilot insulation and more user-friendly
in the fitting of cable accessories.

The new conductor stranding configuration is designed to meet the
demands of the harshest Australian mining conditions while retaining its
flexible characteristics. The new conductor strand design enhances
the tensile strength of the conductor while minimizing the potential of
cork-screwing in all reeling applications.
